When Saft found themselves competing in a marketplace with exacting and varying client and industry standards, along with a large list of certifications to maintain, they decided it was time to implement a quality management system (QMS). Here’s their story.

Who is Saft?

Founded in 1918 and headquartered in France, Saft is a world leader in the development and manufacturing of high-technology batteries. Their batteries are used by customers all over the world, and beyond. Saft batteries are being used on several satellites orbiting the earth, and they are even scheduled to develop a specific battery system to power the ExoMars Rover vehicle. Their nickel-based primary lithium batteries are used applications such as transportation, civil and military electronics, vehicles and aerospace.

Saft’s Challenge to Compete in a Demanding Market

Though very successful in their field, Saft had a lot of pressure to compete in a market place with exacting and varying client and industry standards all while maintaining various certifications. Their production and maintenance tracking were partially automated, but were mostly tracked manually through spreadsheets. Records were not centrally located, so analyzing production data was a very time-consuming task.

“Equipment was being purchased and not reported to the person who was responsible for calibrated equipment tracking,” notes Sherry Campbell, Saft Quality Systems Specialist. “Creation of crucial calibration schedules was very much a manual process. We knew there was a better way to handle things and we needed to find the best QMS system for our needs.”

Saft Chooses a Quality Management System — QAD QMS

Due to its robust operating system and configurability, Saft chose to implement QAD QMS. With their new quality management system in place, Saft was able to consolidate systems, improve transparency, lower costs, and reduce errors. In addition to all of those benefits, Saft was also able to reduce their man hours spent on manual production and maintenance tracking by 50 percent. “QAD QMS has proved to be an essential tool for facilitating daily production and, more importantly, when an audit is required,” said Campbell.
